Korean Neck Cream: What It Can and Can't Do for Neck Lines

Looking for a Korean neck cream? A Gangnam dermatologist explains why neck lines form, what a cream can realistically do and a 2-minute routine to pair with it.

Facial wrinkles and sagging: care for them at home | Marionette lines, neck lines and drooping eyelids [a 3-minute-a-day lifting exercise collection]

I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years of practice and the medical director of VOS Dermatology Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, right in front of Dosan Park. At VOS I see every patient myself, from the first consultation to the last treatment.

Patients often show me a Korean neck cream they bought and ask whether it will remove their neck lines. My honest answer, as a Korean dermatologist, is that a neck cream can support the skin, but neck lines also come from muscles, posture and habits, so the cream helps most as one part of a routine. This page is based on my YouTube video from January 2025, a collection of my home-care exercises for neck lines, marionette lines and drooping eyelids; it summarizes the neck and marionette parts for readers abroad. The video above can be watched with translated captions.

The short answer

  • Neck lines are not only a skin problem: an expressionless face, jaw clenching and looking down keep the platysma, the thin muscle in the front of the neck, tense and pulling downward.
  • Cosmetics are closer to maintenance than change. Sunscreen, antioxidants and moisturizer are the base; any neck cream is a supplement layered on top of those, used steadily for months.
  • A two-minute routine helps: release the jaw, stretch the neck back while opening and closing the mouth, hold the head against your hands for ten seconds in each direction, and sweep lymph downward as you apply cream.
  • Exercises can slow lines from getting worse but will not erase deep marionette lines or loose skin; in-clinic options are chosen at consultation.

Why neck lines form: it is not only the skin

Short answer: an expressionless face, jaw clenching and looking down all keep the front of the neck tense and pulled downward (in the video at 01:00).

When we think we are "just resting" our face, the muscles that pull downward are actually working hard. Many of us also clench our teeth without noticing, and when you clench and look down at a book or a phone, the tension in the neck rises (in the video at 01:43). The platysma, the thin, broad muscle at the front of the neck, stays tight. Over time that downward pull shows up as lines and a heavier lower face. These habits are mostly unconscious, which is why simply deciding "I will stop" rarely works, and why a small, regular routine helps more.

What a Korean neck cream can and can't do

Short answer: cosmetics are closer to maintenance than change, so a neck cream is a supplement layered on top of sunscreen, an antioxidant and a moisturizer, used steadily (in the video at 1:00:15).

The three basics I keep repeating apply to the neck too: sunscreen, an antioxidant to limit damage, and moisturizer (in the video at 1:00:46). If you could keep your skin as it is today for one, two or three years, that alone is slow ageing. What a cream cannot do is relax a tense muscle or lift skin that has already dropped; once things sag, cosmetics struggle, and treatment may be needed.

When I talk about fine, crepey lines in the same video (around the eyes), my advice on retinoids is the rule I use for delicate skin anywhere (in the video at 24:11): look for retinol, retinaldehyde (retinal) or retinyl palmitate, start with a low strength, and stop if you notice stinging, redness, itching or flaking. Delicate skin can need a longer adjustment period. So when you choose a neck cream, read the label for these basics instead of trusting a promise on the box. And give any product time: I see many people try something for two weeks and give up, when steady use over months is what shows a difference (in the video at 1:02:17).

A two-minute neck routine to do while you apply your cream

Short answer: release the jaw, stretch the neck, strengthen the supporting muscles and sweep lymph downward, about two minutes a day (in the video at 02:04).

  1. Release the jaw. With your lips closed, let your jaw drop open slightly. You should feel the lower face and the neck relax at the same time. Whenever you notice you are clenching, open the jaw like this on purpose.
  2. Stretch and open (in the video at 03:09). Tilt your head back as far as is comfortable so the skin at the front of the neck feels a strong tension. In that position, open your mouth slightly and close it again, and repeat. Then turn your head 45 degrees to one side and do the same, then the other side (in the video at 04:10). You should feel the skin stretching, a little like a massage.
  3. Strengthen the support (in the video at 06:08). Place your palm against the side of your head and push, while your neck resists without moving. Hold for a count of ten, then switch sides. Do the same to the front, and to the back with your hands clasped behind your head. I learned how weak my own neck was because I have a slight forward head posture; a stronger neck takes tension off the surface.
  4. Sweep lymph downward (in the video at 08:15). Lymph from the face drains through the neck. Rub gently in front of and behind the ears and under the jaw, then stroke downward to the base of the neck. This is not a cure for lines, but it helps circulation, and the easiest time to do it is when you apply your lotion or cream (in the video at 09:20).

If you have neck pain, a disc problem or dizziness, check with a doctor before doing the stretches.

Marionette lines: three exercises from the same video

Short answer: strengthen the muscles that lift the mouth corners, and release the chin muscle that pulls them down (in the video at 27:50).

Marionette lines run down from the corners of the mouth, like the hinged jaw of a puppet. Around the lips there are muscles that pull up, sideways and down, and because we spend so much time expressionless, the downward pull usually wins.

  • Pull sideways (in the video at 28:37). Draw the corners of your mouth out to the sides as far as you can and hold for fifteen seconds. Rest ten to fifteen seconds, and repeat three times.
  • Hook the corners onto the cheekbones (in the video at 29:42). Smile upward as if you were hooking the mouth corners onto your cheekbones, hold fifteen seconds, rest ten, three times. Do this set morning and evening; it can feel stiff at first, so stay within what is comfortable.
  • Release the chin (in the video at 32:29). When you tense your chin, it dimples and the mouth corners drop. Press firmly with both hands on the point where the chin muscle ends, pull gently downward, and hold fifteen seconds; repeat a little lower, just above the bone.

When home care is not enough: what I discuss in clinic

Short answer: exercises can slow marionette and neck lines from getting worse, but they will not erase deep lines or loose skin, which need treatment chosen at consultation (in the video at 39:01).

In the video I go through the options I consider (in the video at 34:44). Botulinum toxin placed in the muscle that pulls the mouth corners down lets them sit slightly higher, and it works better when you keep doing the lifting exercises; a small dose in the chin can also help. Where the tissue above the line drops onto a flatter area below, a small amount of filler placed to support the border, not to fill, softens the line without an obvious change. Skin boosters spread thinly across the area can build collagen, but they need two or three sessions. For skin that has already dropped, Ultherapy is the lifting option I use most. Focusing Thermage on this small area is a big cost, so I often suggest a treatment that can be repeated, such as Opus RF around the mouth. People with very thin lips may also need a little lip support, because the lips help hold the muscle around the mouth.

For the neck itself, my video page on neck tightening procedures covers in-clinic options in more detail, and my guides to Korean wrinkle treatment and Korean skin tightening explain how I match each line to a fix. You can also see creator experiences at VOS. If you send us a message on WhatsApp, a daylight photo of your neck and lower face and your travel dates help me plan.

Results vary from person to person, and what suits your neck and lower face is decided at an in-person consultation.

Q&A

Q&A — what viewers ask Dr. Kim

Does a Korean neck cream get rid of neck wrinkles?
A cream on its own is unlikely to erase lines that are already there. In my view cosmetics mainly help keep the skin in its current condition: sunscreen, an antioxidant and a moisturizer are the base. Neck lines also come from muscle tension and posture, which a cream cannot change, so I pair skin care with a short daily routine.
What should I look for in a Korean neck cream?
I do not recommend brands. Look for the basics that slow skin ageing anywhere: good moisturizing ingredients, antioxidants, and, if your skin tolerates it, a low-strength retinoid introduced slowly. Stop if it stings, reddens, itches or peels, and keep using sunscreen on the neck during the day.
How long should I do the neck exercises each day?
The routine in the video takes about two minutes. What matters is doing it every day and catching yourself when you are clenching your teeth, then relaxing the jaw on purpose. If you have neck pain or a disc problem, check with your doctor first.
Can exercises fix marionette lines?
They can help prevent them from getting worse, but they will not make established lines disappear. If the problem is mainly fat and skin rather than muscle, treatment gives a faster result. The right combination is decided after an examination.
What can a dermatologist do for neck lines and marionette lines?
Options I discuss in the video include botulinum toxin for the muscles that pull the mouth corners down, a small amount of supportive filler, skin boosters over two or three sessions, Ultherapy for lifting, and a repeatable RF treatment such as Opus. Which one fits depends on your skin, fat and muscle pattern.

Results, swelling and recovery vary from person to person. This page is general information from VOS Dermatology Clinic based on Dr. Kim's video and does not replace an in-person consultation.
