Korean Skin Tightening Treatment: Five Devices Compared
Korean skin tightening treatment: how Thermage FLX, Ultherapy Prime, Sofwave, Volnewmer and Double Tite differ, and what they cost. VOS Dermatology, Gangnam.

I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years of practice behind me. At VOS Dermatology Clinic in Gangnam, I see every patient myself, from the first conversation to the last pulse of energy, one person at a time. Tightening is where I get the most confused messages from abroad, usually because five device names are competing for one decision.
A Korean skin tightening treatment is a non-surgical session that heats a chosen layer of skin, with radiofrequency or ultrasound, so new collagen forms and the skin firms over the following months. At VOS the options are Thermage FLX, Ultherapy Prime, Sofwave, Volnewmer and Double Tite. This guide is for anyone planning skin tightening in Korea who wants to understand how the devices differ and how I choose between them.

Tightening and lifting are not the same job
At VOS, lifting and tightening are treated as distinct concepts. Lifting means supporting tissue that has descended, such as a softening jawline or a lowered brow. Tightening means firming skin that has become looser, thinner or crepey, even if it has not dropped much.
Most faces over 40 have some of both, but usually one dominates. That matters because the devices are not interchangeable. An ultrasound device aimed at the deep support layer does less for crinkly under-eye skin, and a surface-level device does little for a jowl.
So the first question in my room is not which device you read about. It is where your laxity sits.
A quick way to see this for yourself: stand in front of a mirror and gently lift the skin in front of your ear upward. If your jawline sharpens noticeably, descent is a large part of the picture. If the change is small but the skin looks finely creased, the dermis is the main target, and a tightening device aimed there will matter more than a deep lift.
The five devices at a glance
Here is how the five tightening devices at VOS compare on the points patients ask about most. The timelines come from our own treatment documentation, and all of them vary by person.
| Device | Energy | Main target | Session | Typical result window |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ultherapy Prime | Focused ultrasound with imaging | Deep support layer and deep dermis | Under 1 hour | Builds over 2–3 months; designed to last up to 1 year |
| Thermage FLX | Monopolar radiofrequency | Deep dermis, across a whole area | Less than 1 hour | Improves over 2–6 months; typically 1–1.5 years |
| Sofwave | 12MHz ultrasound at 1.5mm | Mid-dermis, where fine lines sit | Short | Visible from 1 month, peak at 3 months |
| Volnewmer | 6.78MHz monopolar radiofrequency | Dermis, volume and elasticity | Less than 30 minutes | Typically 12–18 months |
| Double Tite | Radiofrequency plus focused ultrasound | Surface and deep layers together | Within 15 minutes | Clearer over 2–3 months; around 1 year |

Radiofrequency: Thermage FLX and Volnewmer
Radiofrequency heats the dermis as a field rather than in points. That makes it suited to overall firmness, crepey skin and softening the contour.
Thermage FLX uses AccuREP energy tuning and cooling before, during and after each pulse, with separate tips for the face and the eye area. Many people feel some tightening immediately, then gradual improvement over 2–6 months. If you want the full picture of this device, my guide to Thermage FLX in Korea covers it step by step.
Volnewmer is also monopolar radiofrequency, cleared by the US FDA and Korea's MFDS. I start each session with a skin-resistance check on the first shot, then choose from four tip sizes for each area. I often suggest it for people who are sensitive to pain or want regular maintenance with minimal irritation. Afterwards, avoid intense exercise, alcohol and saunas for 24 hours.
Ultrasound: Ultherapy Prime and Sofwave
Ultrasound can be focused to a precise depth, which is why the two ultrasound devices at VOS do quite different jobs.
Ultherapy Prime reaches the deep support layer, the SMAS, as well as the deep dermis. Its DeepSEE imaging lets me see the layers before each line of shots, at depths of 1.5mm, 3.0mm and 4.5mm. It is the device for a sagging jawline, a lowered brow and loose skin under the chin. I compare it with radiofrequency in Ultherapy vs Thermage.
Sofwave sends seven 12MHz beams to the mid-dermis at 1.5mm, the depth where fine lines live, while the surface is cooled. It suits thin skin with crinkly lines, a brow that needs a little lift, and people who want a short session. It tends to do less on young skin that has not yet lost elasticity. My Sofwave guide goes deeper.

Double Tite: two energies in one short session
Double Tite combines radiofrequency and focused ultrasound, so the surface and deeper layers are treated at the same time. It is completed within 15 minutes and there is no recovery period.
I use it mainly at an earlier stage: skin that has started to feel dry, slack and finely lined, before a full lift is needed. It suits people in their 40s who are beginning to notice change and want to act early. Improvement starts immediately and becomes clearer over 2–3 months, typically lasting around a year, with individual variation.
How I choose a skin tightening device
Choosing is mostly a matter of matching the device to the layer, then to your tolerance and your schedule. This is roughly how my reasoning runs at consultation.
- Softening jawline or lowered brows: Ultherapy Prime first
- Overall looseness or crepey eyelid skin: Thermage FLX
- Fine, crinkly lines on thin skin: Sofwave
- Pain sensitivity or a wish for regular, gentle maintenance: Volnewmer
- Early change, prevention and a very short session: Double Tite
- Deep laxity plus fine surface lines: a combination may make sense
I examine your skin with 3D skin analysis before deciding, and I will tell you if a device you asked about is not the right tool. Sometimes the answer is a skin booster or no treatment at all. If you want to see how tightening fits into a broader plan with injectables, my overview of Korean anti aging explains how I layer treatments.
Worth knowing: Tightening devices stimulate collagen; they do not remove excess skin. When skin hangs in folds, heat-based treatments make a smaller difference than people hope, and I would rather tell you that before your trip than after.

Planning skin tightening in Seoul around a trip
Skin tightening in Seoul fits a short visit well, because none of these five devices needs a recovery period. You can have a session and walk back into your day, with some redness or mild swelling that usually fades within minutes to hours.
Double Tite is the exception on scheduling, not recovery: it can be planned as 2–3 treatments at 1-month intervals, which suits people who visit Seoul more than once. For a single trip, I usually plan one device, or one planned combination, and explain what maintenance might look like later.
