Apply sunscreen like this and skin aging hits hard: a dermatologist applies it on camera to show how to use sunscreen properly

I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified Korean dermatologist with 21 years of practice and the medical director of VOS Dermatology Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, in front of Dosan Park. At VOS I see every patient myself, from the consultation to the treatment.

"How often to reapply sunscreen?" is a question I hear every spring, usually from people who find topping up over makeup almost impossible. My honest answer is that how you apply it in the morning decides more than how many times you reapply, and that the type of sunscreen you choose changes how it behaves on your skin. In this short video I filmed outside on a cloudy day with a UV camera, mineral sunscreen on one side of my face and chemical sunscreen on the other. This page is based on my YouTube video from May 2025, rewritten for readers abroad, and the video above can be watched with translated captions.

The short answer

  • I do not give a fixed clock in this video: a generous morning layer of high-SPF sunscreen does most of the work, and you top up when sweat, water or rubbing has worn it off.
  • Most people apply about a quarter of the tested amount, so I apply a second layer straight away; over makeup, an SPF compact is the practical way to top up.
  • Mineral sunscreen forms a film that works as soon as it is on and suits sensitive skin; chemical sunscreen spreads more easily but needs about 30 minutes to start working.
  • On cloudy days 80 to 90% of UVA still reaches the ground, and sunscreen should wait on wounds or freshly treated skin.

Do you need sunscreen on a cloudy day?

Short answer: yes, because cloud blocks only a small share of UVA, and cool days make people stay out longer (in the video at 00:43).

UVC is stopped by the atmosphere, which leaves UVA and UVB. UVA is weak in the moment, but long exposure to it ages skin. Even on a day with thick cloud, only about 20% of UVA is blocked, so 80 to 90% still reaches the ground. UVB has a shorter wavelength, so glass and cloud block more of it: around 20 to 50% on a partly cloudy day and 50 to 80% under very thick cloud, but never all of it (in the video at 01:06).

The bigger problem is behaviour (in the video at 01:25). On a hot, bright day we avoid direct sun. On a cool, overcast day it feels pleasant, so we spend longer outside, often without any sunscreen at all, and end up with more UV exposure than on a sunny day.

Mineral vs chemical sunscreen: how they work on skin

Short answer: mineral sunscreen forms a film and works as soon as it is on; chemical sunscreen absorbs UV and needs about 30 minutes to start working, but spreads more easily (in the video at 02:08).

There are two main types, plus hybrids that mix both. A mineral (physical) sunscreen sits on the skin as a barrier, so you can apply it right before you go out. It tends to leave a white cast and spreads less easily, which is exactly why "tone-up" sunscreens became popular: they turn that white cast into a brightening effect. A chemical sunscreen needs time to act after you apply it, around 30 minutes, but it glides on and the white cast disappears almost at once (in the video at 04:04).

Under the UV camera, the mineral side of my face looked white and the chemical side looked dark (in the video at 04:24). That is the mechanism made visible: mineral filters reflect and scatter UV, while chemical filters absorb it. If your skin is sensitive or has ongoing problems, use mineral sunscreen; healthy skin without trouble is fine with chemical sunscreen (in the video at 02:50).

How much to apply: why the second layer counts

Short answer: most people apply about a quarter of the tested amount, so apply one layer and then a second one straight away (in the video at 05:06).

The tested amount is roughly the length of one finger joint for the face, and even I do not apply that much in one go, because it turns the face white. The typical dab people put on is only about a quarter of it (in the video at 05:13). My practical fix is to apply your usual amount and then immediately apply the same amount again (in the video at 05:23). In the video I ended up with three layers in total, and the white cast was milder than I expected, though that varies by product. If you want to know how your own skin type handles different textures, skin type analysis with VOS Skin MBTI is how we read it at the clinic.

Layering two types, and why some sunscreens sting

Short answer: putting mineral over chemical is fine for protection, but sensitive skin does better with a single product and fewer ingredients (in the video at 06:18).

For blocking UV alone, using a chemical sunscreen and then a mineral one causes no problem. But my rule for sensitive or allergy-prone skin is to minimise ingredients, and two sunscreens means many more of them (in the video at 06:24). Even mineral sunscreens contain ingredients that help the filters stick to the skin, and sometimes fragrance. So it is not accurate to say sunscreen itself makes skin sensitive; some ingredients inside it can. A few chemical filters in particular can cause photosensitivity or allergic reactions, which is why I steer sensitive skin towards mineral sunscreen (in the video at 07:17).

There are also times to hold off (in the video at 07:32). On a wound, or on raw skin left by eczema or allergy, sunscreen ingredients can irritate. After mole removal I tell patients to wait at least three days, ideally a week; my page on mole removal in Korea explains the aftercare. On healthy skin, sunscreen is not a problem.

Reapplying sunscreen over makeup

Short answer: build protection into your base, then top up lightly with an SPF compact when sweat or rubbing has worn it off (in the video at 08:39).

If you wear makeup, apply sunscreen well at the base stage. Enough of a high-SPF sunscreen gives a level of protection that holds through the day, so you would not strictly need to reapply (in the video at 08:41). Sweat and other factors can wipe some of it away, but the protection time is largely maintained, and that is the most important part. For a top-up, lightly press on a compact or powder with sunscreen in it (in the video at 09:04).

In summer, when you sweat heavily and dust sticks to your face, should you layer more product on top? There is no single right answer (in the video at 09:18). If you think UV protection matters more, reapply. If you think putting more product over sweat and dust will cause breakouts, that is also a valid choice. Advice to "reapply every so often" is often given for clean, ideal conditions, but in real life it is hard to do, which is why using sunscreen properly from the start matters most (in the video at 09:56). For long days outdoors, I suggest a regular top-up schedule in my guide to choosing and applying a Korean sunscreen for face, which comes from a separate, longer video.

Daily habits like this are also where my overview of which skin care steps need a dermatologist starts, and our creator experiences at VOS show how visitors fitted clinic care around their own routines.

Results vary from person to person, and the right plan for your skin is decided at an in-person consultation.

Q&A

Q&A — what viewers ask Dr. Kim

How often should I reapply sunscreen?
In this video my point is that the first application matters most: apply enough of a high-SPF sunscreen in the morning and its protection holds through ordinary days. Sweat, water and wiping can remove it, so top up after those. When you are outdoors for long periods, more frequent top-ups make sense; my longer sunscreen guide covers that in detail.
How do I reapply sunscreen over makeup?
Lightly press on a compact or powder that contains sunscreen. In a hot, dusty summer, whether to layer more product over sweat and dust is a judgement call: if you worry more about breakouts, skip it; if UV worries you more, reapply.
Can I put mineral sunscreen on top of chemical sunscreen?
For UV protection alone, yes, it is fine. If your skin is sensitive or allergy-prone, though, I suggest using just one sunscreen so you keep the number of ingredients low.
Is mineral or chemical sunscreen better for sensitive skin?
Mineral (physical) sunscreen is the safer choice for sensitive or reactive skin, because some chemical filters can cause photosensitivity or allergic reactions. Healthy skin without trouble can use chemical sunscreen without any issue.
Do I need sunscreen if it is cloudy?
Yes. Thick cloud blocks only about 20% of UVA, and even very thick cloud lets some UVB through. Cool, cloudy days also tempt people to stay outside longer without protection.

Results, swelling and recovery vary from person to person. This page is general information from VOS Dermatology Clinic based on Dr. Kim's video and does not replace an in-person consultation.
