Korea Skin Care in Seoul: Which Steps Need a Dermatologist

Korea skin care splits into a home routine and clinic care. A board-certified dermatologist explains who suits which, plus recovery. VOS Dermatology…

VOS Dermatology Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul

Korea skin care is two things under one name: a home routine of cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen, and clinic care that a dermatologist plans for your skin. For a visitor, the clinic half is the part to plan, and at VOS Dermatology Clinic every procedure from consultation to treatment is done by the same doctor, with a 1:1 consultation based on your skin analysis. The usual worry for people flying in is downtime, meaning whether redness or swelling will still show on the flight home.

I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years of experience, and I perform every treatment at VOS in Gangnam myself, so this guide to korea skin care comes from the treatment room, not from a product shelf. Every skin is different, so the diagnosis and treatment differ too, and results vary from person to person.

What korea skin care means once you land in Seoul

Korea skin care covers a home routine and clinic treatments. The routine protects and hydrates the surface; clinic treatments reach the deeper layers where collagen and elasticity are made.

Online, the first half gets all the attention: double cleansing, layered hydration, daily sunscreen. Visitors usually need the second half explained, because you cannot pick it up at a pharmacy. VOS groups its skin-quality treatments under Better Skin Glow: Sofwave, Thermage FLX, Volnewmer, Opus, Double Tite, Mirajet, Gouri and Hilo Wave, all planned and performed by me after an in-person skin analysis.

Why can't a routine do what a clinic treatment does?

Devices and injections get around that limit in different ways.

The often-cited 500 Dalton rule (Bos and Meinardi, Experimental Dermatology, 2000) holds that compounds above roughly 500 Daltons do not readily penetrate intact skin. A serum can sit on the surface and feel wonderful, and that has real value for comfort. It just is not the same event as stimulating collagen.

Ultrasound and radiofrequency devices heat tissue below the surface so the skin starts building new collagen.

The routine still matters, and I come back to it below. The point here is that a ten-step routine and a clinic visit are answering different questions.

Who suits clinic care, and who should hold off?

Clinic care suits adults whose concerns sit below the surface: loss of firmness, fine lines, enlarged pores, acne scars or uneven tone. If your main complaint is dryness or a tired surface, the routine and a facial may already be enough.

A useful way to sort yourself is by the thing you see in the mirror:

Risks and side effects to know

  • Dry, flat skin that still holds its shape: skin boosters such as Rejuran work on quality and hydration from within.
  • Looseness along the jaw or cheeks, deeper lines: heat- and ultrasound-based devices like Thermage FLX and Sofwave are the usual category.
  • Scars, pores, rough texture: Opus and Mirajet are the options VOS lists for texture and scar revision.
  • A clean, bright surface before an event: a facial such as HydraFacial, which is on the clinic's equipment list.

In your 40s and beyond, the question is usually laxity plus quality together, and that is where the order of treatments starts to matter.

Who should hold off? Pregnancy and certain skin conditions need a consultation first. Skin that is currently irritated or inflamed generally has to settle before energy devices are considered, because heat on an inflamed surface raises the chance of a reaction.

VOS signature treatments: skin boosters (Juvelook, Juvelook Volume, Juveacell, Hilo Wave, Gouri), hand-injected by the doctor, and lifting with original devices (Ultherapy Prime, Thermage FLX, Sofwave, Onda and Opus)
The two things I focus on: skin boosters I inject by hand, and lifting with original devices.

How I approach a first visit

I start with the skin, not the menu. The first step at VOS is an in-person skin analysis, and the clinic uses 3D Skin Analysis to look at complex skin issues more closely than a mirror allows. Treatment follows from that analysis, and the same doctor who examined your skin performs it.

Doctor's note

I would rather see you wear sunscreen every day and treat one concern well than stack five devices into one trip. Energy devices and boosters do different jobs, and combining them is a medical judgment about your skin, not a shopping list.

For people who dread injections, VOS also uses nitrous oxide sedation, with more than 5,700 cases to date.

Which skin care treatments have downtime, and for how long?

Most of these treatments carry little downtime: redness that fades within hours is typical for Sofwave, Thermage FLX and Mirajet, while Opus can leave fine scabs for a few days.

The figures below come from VOS's own treatment notes; timing and results vary from person to person.

TreatmentDowntimeWhen results show
SofwaveNone; mild redness fades in about 20–30 minutesFrom 1 month, peak at 3 months
Thermage FLXNone; redness or mild swelling settles within hoursGradual over 2–6 months
OpusShort; redness, swelling or fine scabs for a few daysClearer over 2–3 months
MirajetMild redness or swelling for a few hours, up to a dayGradual; one session holds 3–6 months

Rejuran runs on a different clock: three sessions one month apart, with effects lasting over six months. On a single trip that normally means one session of the course.

Can I fit korea skin care around a flight home?

Usually yes, if the treatment with the longest visible downtime goes early in your stay. Opus asks for strict sunscreen and no saunas or intense exercise for 3 to 5 days, so it should not be your last-day treatment.

The clinic is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays, which matters more than people expect when a short trip is built around a weekend. From Gangnam-gu Office Station on Line 7 it is an 11-minute walk.

Any injection or energy device can cause bruising, swelling, infection or uneven pigmentation. These are uncommon, but they are real, and the in-person exam is where I decide whether a treatment is reasonable for your skin at all. More on what is normal afterwards is in the post on glass skin treatment side effects.

The home routine still matters, in a smaller role

Daily sunscreen protects the collagen that clinic treatments stimulate, so it comes first in any plan. A gentle cleanser matched to oily or dry skin and a moisturizer come next, and that is enough for most people.

The long product lists behind searches like korean face wash for oily skin or skin care products in korea are mostly about preference and texture. A cleanser that leaves skin tight is stripping it, whatever the label says. Glass skin, in practice, is even tone plus hydration, and the order of steps matters more than the number; I laid it out in how to get Korean glass skin.

What a routine cannot do is tighten, lift or revise scars. Knowing that early saves visitors from buying a fourth serum to fix a problem that sits in the dermis.

FAQ

Questions readers ask about korea skin care

Do Korean skincare products work without clinic treatments?
Yes for hydration and protection. A routine keeps the surface comfortable and shields it from UV, which is a real job. Many people are well served by the routine alone.
Is a HydraFacial the same as a glass skin treatment?
No. HydraFacial is a cleansing facial that exfoliates, extracts and hydrates the surface, and it is on VOS's equipment list. Glass skin boosters such as Rejuran act in the dermis, a deeper layer. The choice follows what you want: a clean surface this week, or slower improvement in skin quality.
How long should I stay in Seoul for clinic skin care?
A Rejuran course spaces sessions one month apart, so one trip usually holds one session.
Can I have these treatments if I am pregnant or have a skin condition?
VOS's own patient guidance says pregnancy or certain skin conditions require a consultation first. Tell the doctor about both before you plan a trip around a treatment, because some options may need to wait until the skin or your situation has changed.
Who actually performs the treatment at VOS?
All procedures at VOS are performed by Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years of experience, from consultation through treatment.
Where is the clinic and when is it open?
VOS is at 806 Eonju-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, in front of Dosan Park. Hours are Mon/Tue/Thu 10:00–19:00, Fri 10:00–20:00 and Sat 10:00–16:00, closed Wed, Sun and public holidays. Valet parking is available at the building.
