Korean Lift Before a Flight Home: Which Treatments Won't Show?
Planning a Korean lift right before you fly home? A Gangnam dermatologist explains why Ultherapy Prime, Sofwave and Opus rarely leave visible swelling.
Three lifting treatments that don't show: subtle, effortless-looking results, from a dermatologist
From Dr. Hongseok Kim's YouTube channel — Korean audio. It plays muted; tap the video to turn the sound on.

I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years of practice and the medical director of VOS Dermatology Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, right in front of Dosan Park. At VOS I see every patient myself, from the first consultation to the last shot of every device.
Many visitors want a Korean lift in the last days of their trip, and by that they usually mean a non-surgical lifting treatment at a Korean dermatology clinic, not a facelift or any named surgical technique. One request comes up again and again: "I fly home tomorrow. What can I still have done? I can't go back swollen, and I can't have bruises." So I answered it on camera with the three devices I reach for in that situation. This page is based on my YouTube video from July 2026; I rewrote it for readers abroad and checked it against how we work at VOS today. The video above can be watched with translated captions.
The short answer
- Ultherapy Prime, Sofwave and the RF modes of Opus all work without needles or incisions, so visible swelling and bruising are uncommon and most people go about their day straight away.
- With Ultherapy Prime I prefer moderate energy with enough shots rather than very strong energy, because overly strong energy in one area is linked to problems such as cheek hollowing.
- Sofwave is ultrasound but not focused ultrasound: it heats a whole plane at 1.5mm, so it pairs well with Ultherapy Prime, which works deeper, when both layers need help.
- The rolling RF handpieces of Opus suit a light refresher before an event; the plasma handpiece can leave redness or fine scabs for a few days, so it is better placed early in a trip.
Can you get a Korean lift right before a flight?
Short answer: yes, with the right kind of device, because needle-free ultrasound and RF treatments rarely leave visible swelling or bruising.
The question in the video (at 00:00) is a very practical one. Injections can sometimes leave bruising or a few days of swelling. The three treatments I describe here work with energy through the skin instead, so there are no needle marks and most people return to their day immediately. They can be done separately or, when it suits the plan, on the same day.
That does not mean nothing ever shows. Mild redness is common for a short time, and skin reacts differently from person to person.
Ultherapy Prime: a focused-ultrasound lift with moderate energy
Short answer: Ultherapy Prime can be done right before travel, and I get better results from moderate energy with enough shots than from very strong energy.
Ultherapy Prime is the treatment I am asked about most (in the video at 00:35). It uses high-intensity focused ultrasound, often called HIFU: each shot forms a tiny point of heat at a set depth. The 4.5mm setting reaches the SMAS, the deep supporting layer; 3.0mm reaches the deep dermis and the fat just beneath it; 1.5mm works in the upper dermis. Lifting depends mostly on the deeper settings. The DeepSEE imaging on the device lets me check the layers before I fire, and I place shots at even 1mm intervals.
In the video I compare it to grilling meat. Heat it well and it cooks; keep piling strong heat on the same spot and it burns. Ultherapy places a great many points of heat in the skin. If every point is very strong, the total energy becomes too much, and that is when problems such as cheek hollowing tend to appear. So I use appropriate energy with a sufficient number of shots. A gentler setting also means swelling is usually minimal, which is why travelling right after is generally not a problem.
Ultherapy works slowly (in the video at 02:42). During the session you can often see the contour tighten, but much of that settles back over the next days. The fuller change comes as collagen builds over two to three months, and a single session is designed to last up to about a year, depending on the person. If you are comparing devices, my guide to Korean HIFU vs Ultherapy explains what to ask, my Ultherapy Prime in Korea guide covers who it suits and how a session runs, and one patient's Ultherapy Prime double-chin case shows how a real visit went.
Sofwave: ultrasound that tightens at 1.5mm
Short answer: Sofwave tightens the upper layer of skin and is a good choice before travel, especially for people with little volume in the cheeks.
Sofwave is also ultrasound, but it behaves quite differently (in the video at 03:22). Ultherapy Prime also has a 1.5mm tip, but it fires dots at regular intervals. As I explain in the video (at 03:47), HIFU creates heat as a row of points, whereas Sofwave sends seven parallel beams at 1.5mm at the same moment, so it heats a whole plane rather than a row of dots. It is not focused ultrasound, and it feels more like a radiofrequency treatment, with a stronger wave of warmth.
If Ultherapy feels like lifting upward, Sofwave feels like skin being smoothed out and drawn taut. Because it works at 1.5mm and not in the deeper layers, volume loss in the cheeks is much less of a concern, so I often use it for people with thin faces who still want firmer skin. The immediate change is modest, but the skin feels tighter afterwards and the result settles further over two to three months (in the video at 05:16). Strong energy can leave some redness, which usually settles within about 30 minutes to an hour (in the video at 05:22). My Sofwave in Korea guide covers who it suits in more detail.
Why Ultherapy Prime and Sofwave work well together
Short answer: they treat different depths, so combining them addresses the deep and the shallow layers in one visit.
Many patients ask whether two ultrasound treatments on the same day is too much (in the video at 05:36). In my experience it is a sensible pairing: Ultherapy Prime at 4.5mm and 3.0mm supports the deeper structure, and Sofwave at 1.5mm firms the surface. Together they cover the full thickness of the skin. I set the plan around how much laxity you have and how thick your skin is, and many people need only one of them.
Opus: a light refresher you can have at any point
Short answer: Opus is a plasma and RF device; its rolling RF handpieces are comfortable, can be repeated between bigger treatments and suit the days before an event.
Opus is a device I use a lot these days (in the video at 06:03). Ultherapy Prime and Sofwave need a gap between sessions. Opus is different: you can come in for it in between, or before an important occasion. The heat is not the uncomfortably hot kind, and most people find it tolerable.
It has several handpieces. The plasma handpiece works on the skin surface and helps pores, fine lines and texture; it can also be combined with pigment treatment. It does affect the surface, though, and temporary redness, swelling or fine scabs can appear for a few days, with strict sunscreen for three to five days. The UniLarge mode, which I use most, is a rolling RF handpiece that heats the dermis evenly without strong heat (in the video at 07:11). There is also a newer rolling handpiece with a rotating head that feels like a facial massage; it helps puffiness settle while the warmth firms the skin, which is what people call an Opus detox.
Planning a Korean lift around your trip
Short answer: Opus adds an even layer of surface heat to deeper treatments, and the three can be done together or separately depending on your goal and your travel dates.
Ultherapy Prime works deep below the surface (in the video at 08:42). Laying an even pass of Opus RF over it adds surface heating, and in my experience the combination works better than either alone. I also use Opus before a deeper RF lift to warm the whole face first, and after some skin-booster injections. Not every patient needs a combination, so Opus on its own is a reasonable choice too.
To sum up the video (at 10:19): Ultherapy Prime, Sofwave and Opus can all fit into the days before travel, together or separately, according to your goal. The aim of a Korean lift timed this way is less puffiness, a tidier contour and skin that keeps improving after you are home. If loose skin and lines on the neck are your main concern, I cover that separately in neck tightening procedures.
If you are coming to Gangnam for a Korean lift, the visit starts with a consultation in which I set the areas and the energy level, and the treatment follows that plan. If heat or prickling worries you, nitrous-oxide conscious sedation is available. Before booking, send us on WhatsApp your departure date and time, a clear daylight photo without make-up, and any treatments you have had in the past year, so you get a clear plan and quote before anything is scheduled. You can also see creator experiences at VOS.
Results, timing and recovery vary from person to person, and the right plan for you is decided at an in-person consultation.
