Rejuran Microneedling vs Injection? Cost, Reviews, Recovery

Rejuran microneedling vs injection: injection gives a measured dose in the dermis. Dr. Hongseok Kim on cost and recovery at VOS Dermatology, Gangnam.

VOS Dermatology Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul

Stuck on Rejuran microneedling vs injection because the needles scare you, but you don't want to fly to Seoul and waste the treatment?

Read this before you pick one.

You'll know how each method gets the product into your skin, what decides the cost, what reviews get right and wrong, and what recovery looks like, so you can choose for your skin and your budget.

Hello, I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years of experience and the Medical Director of VOS Dermatology Clinic in Gangnam. I handle the consultation and the procedure myself.

My Rejuran menu covers Healer, HB and Eye, every plan starts with a skin analysis, and the price list is the same for every nationality.

I'm writing this because many people assume the two methods deliver the same dose, and that assumption decides a lot of trips.

Injection places a measured amount of Rejuran in the dermis, while microneedling opens tiny channels and leaves the delivered amount unknown. For thin, crepey skin I lean toward injection. Microneedling makes more sense when texture is the main complaint.

If you're unsure which side you fall on, send one daylight photo of the area that bothers you on WhatsApp and ask which method makes sense for that spot.

I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim. I see every patient myself — the consultation, the diagnosis and the treatment.

What is the real difference between the two methods?

The difference is where the product ends up and how much of it you can account for. With injection, a fine needle leaves small deposits in the dermis, the layer where the cells that make collagen live. The amount is written down in millilitres: my menu lists Healer at 2 mL and HB and Eye at 1 mL each.

Microneedling works from the surface. A pen or roller makes many short punctures, the solution is spread over the skin, and some of it travels down those channels before they close. Nobody can tell you afterwards how many millilitres reached the dermis. Part of it stays on the surface and gets wiped off.

Molecule size is why this matters. Rejuran is a polynucleotide, a long DNA-derived chain taken from salmon. The 500 Dalton rule, published in Experimental Dermatology, describes how intact skin lets through only small molecules, which explains why a Rejuran serum can't do what an injection does. Microneedling gets past that barrier for a short time. It doesn't make the dose measurable.

The evidence deserves a plain description too. A systematic review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reports skin-quality improvements with polynucleotides, across studies that differ a good deal in design. I know of few direct trials of these two delivery routes, so treat confident claims in either direction with caution.

One thing about my own menu. The Rejuran on my price list is product by the millilitre, for injection, and there is no microneedling-delivered Rejuran line on it. The microneedling device I list is Potenza RF, part of my Signature Acne Scar Program. That is a separate treatment, which sends radiofrequency energy through its needles to work on scars and texture.

Who each method suits

The mirror usually answers this faster than the brochure does. Find your main complaint in the left column.

Your main complaintInjected RejuranMicroneedling with polynucleotide
Thin, crepey cheeks or neckMeasured dose placed where skin is thinLight effect, dose unknown
Fine lines around the eyesRejuran Eye is listed for this areaLimited close to the lids
Uneven texture, shallow scarsHelps skin quality, less so scar shapeThe needling itself does part of the work
Strong fear of needlesStings, numbing helpsMany short punctures, numbing still needed

Microneedling has real uses. When pores, mild scarring or rough texture are the complaint, the controlled injury drives much of the change and the product plays a supporting part. That is a fair reason to choose it, as long as you know what you are paying for.

For crepey lids and crow's feet, the area has its own considerations, which I go through in my note on Rejuran for fine lines around the eyes.

How I approach the choice for thin, aging skin

I start from the skin analysis, then the method. Every skin is different, so the first question I'd put to you is what you see in the mirror: skin that looks thin and tired, or skin that looks rough and uneven? Thinness points me toward product at depth. Roughness opens the door to needling.

Dosing is the other half of my reasoning. I hold to exact dosage and concentration for every injectable, neither more nor less than the skin needs, and I can't apply that standard to a solution spread across the surface. My clinic also uses a 5μm filter syringe to keep particles such as ampoule glass shards out of what is injected.

Say you're 56, with crepey cheeks, early neck lines, five days in Seoul and a real dread of needles. I would reason this way: the neck and cheeks both need product in thin skin, so injected Healer fits the complaint. Then I'd look at your medication list, because bruising on thin skin is what you would notice on the flight home. Needling would be easier to face and harder to justify for that goal.

Doctor's note

A method that sounds less frightening but delivers an unknown dose doesn't serve someone who crossed an ocean for it. If the needle is the obstacle, I'd rather talk about the needle. Numbing cream is a common step in dermatology, and my clinic offers nitrous oxide sedation, with over 5,700 cases so far. Ask whether it fits your plan.

To get this conversation started, add your medication list to your photo on WhatsApp and ask how much bruising to plan around for your cheeks or neck.

What do reviews get right and wrong?

Review threads on Rejuran repeat a few claims, and they hold up unevenly.

  • Microneedling gives the same result without the bumps. Half right. You avoid rows of raised bumps, but you trade them for overall redness, and I know of no good evidence that the result is the same.
  • Visible bumps mean a bad injector. Mostly wrong. Small raised deposits are an expected part of injecting into the dermis, and they usually flatten on their own.
  • Rejuran stings more than other boosters. Often true. The product is viscous and many people find it uncomfortable, which is why numbing is common.
  • One session changes everything. Unlikely. Skin-quality changes tend to build over weeks, and a course of several sessions is common.
VOS signature treatments: skin boosters (Juvelook, Juvelook Volume, Juveacell, Hilo Wave, Gouri), hand-injected by the doctor, and lifting with original devices (Ultherapy Prime, Thermage FLX, Sofwave, Onda and Opus)
The two things I focus on: skin boosters I inject by hand, and lifting with original devices.

How long is recovery with each method?

The Rejuran microneedling vs injection question looks different once you count your days. After injection, small bumps usually settle in about a day, sometimes longer on thin skin. Pinpoint bruises can take about a week to fade. After microneedling, expect redness like a mild sunburn for one to three days, then some dryness or flaking.

If your skin reddens easily, read my note on Rejuran injection for thin, sensitive skin before you set your dates. For either method, an early slot in your trip gives marks more time to fade before the flight. My clinic is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 to 19:00, Friday until 20:00 and Saturday until 16:00, and closed Wednesday, Sunday and public holidays, so those days can't hold your appointment.

Worth knowing: Whichever method you're offered, ask which product and how many millilitres are in the plan. With microneedling, also ask how much of the vial is expected to stay on the surface.

What decides the cost of Rejuran?

Five things move the figure for your case:

  • The product and the amount: Healer, HB or Eye, and how many millilitres.
  • The areas: face, eye area, lips, neck or décolleté.
  • The number of sessions, and whether they fit in one trip or several.
  • Comfort choices such as nitrous oxide sedation.
  • Any combination, for example adding an energy device. If Potenza is on your mind, my Potenza cost guide covers how that treatment is priced.

Ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, with a photo of the area. Prices on my list are before VAT and can change, so ask for the total.

Risks and side effects to know

Common, temporary reactions to injection are bumps, redness, stinging, tenderness and small bruises, usually over days. Microneedling commonly brings redness, tightness and flaking. Both break the skin barrier, so infection is possible with either. Dermatology literature has also described granuloma reactions after products were applied through microneedling channels, which is one more reason to ask exactly what goes on your skin.

As general medicine, you should hold off or skip either method if any of these apply:

  • An allergy to salmon or fish-derived ingredients, since Rejuran is salmon-derived.
  • Infection or inflamed acne at the treatment site.
  • A recent laser or peel in the same area.
  • Isotretinoin use, now or recently.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Blood thinners, which you should raise beforehand because they make bruising more likely.

Once you're home, photograph anything unexpected and message the clinic. Spreading redness, heat, pus, fever, or a lump that keeps growing needs a local doctor promptly. The US CDC's medical tourism guidance also advises arranging follow-up care at home before you travel, so find a dermatologist there first.

FAQ

Questions readers ask about rejuran microneedling vs injection

Can Rejuran be applied with a microneedling pen at all?
Some clinics do spread polynucleotide solution over the skin during microneedling, so the technique exists. The catch is that the amount reaching the dermis can't be measured. On my own price list, Rejuran appears as product by the millilitre for injection, and I don't list a microneedling-delivered version. Ask any clinic that offers it what the product is and how much is used.
Does injected Rejuran last longer than the microneedled version?
I can't give you a reliable comparison, because few direct trials of the two routes exist. The reasoning favors injection for thin skin, since a known amount is placed at a known depth. For either method, skin-quality changes tend to fade gradually, and many people plan repeat sessions. Be cautious of anyone quoting exact durations for microneedled product.
Can I have Potenza and Rejuran on the same trip?
It's a fair thing to ask, because the two do different jobs: Potenza works on scars and texture with radiofrequency, while Rejuran targets skin quality. Combining them adds to the redness and to the healing time you need before flying. Tell me your dates and your main complaint when you write, and ask whether the combination is worthwhile for your skin.
How many Rejuran sessions should I plan if I only visit Seoul once?
A course of several sessions spaced a few weeks apart is common for skin boosters, which doesn't fit neatly into a single trip. One session can still help, though you should expect a modest change that builds slowly. Mention how often you can realistically return, because that shapes which areas are worth treating first and how you spend your budget.
Is microneedling less painful than a Rejuran injection?
Many people find it easier to face, but it isn't without discomfort. A pen makes many shallow punctures across the whole area, whereas injection gives fewer, deeper stings from a viscous product. Numbing cream is commonly used for both. If fear of needles is what's holding you back, ask about numbing and about nitrous oxide sedation, which my clinic offers.
