Korean Glass Skin Facial: What It Combines, Spa vs Clinic

I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years in practice. At VOS Dermatology Clinic in Gangnam, every consultation and every treatment is done by me, one patient at a time, and I am often asked by visitors to "book a glass skin facial" as if it were a single item on a menu. It is not, and I think it is worth explaining what sits behind the name before you plan a morning of your trip around it.

The short answer: a Korean glass skin facial in a dermatology clinic is a combination of steps rather than one treatment. It usually pairs a deep-cleansing device facial with a way of delivering hydration into the skin, needle-free or by injection, to make the surface clear, smooth and luminous. This guide is for adults visiting Seoul, often before an event, who want to know what each step adds, how it differs from a spa facial and how long the glow lasts.

The phrase is used by spas and clinics alike, and the two versions share a name and little else. A spa version is about the surface and the experience. A clinic version is about which skin layer each step reaches, and it starts with an assessment.

Neither is wrong. If you want a relaxing afternoon and a fresh face for dinner, a spa facial is a pleasant choice. If you want the glow to hold beyond the day, or your skin is dry and tired underneath, the clinic version is aimed at that. I only offer the clinic version, so that is what the rest of this guide describes.

The idea behind the combination: clear first, then hydrate

Glass skin looks the way it does because the surface is smooth and the skin underneath holds water. A clinic glass skin facial treatment works on both, in order.

The first step clears the surface: dead cells, sebum and congestion that scatter light and stop anything else from working. The second step puts hydration where the skin actually stores it, in the dermis, rather than leaving it on top where it evaporates. An optional third step adds an injectable booster when the skin needs more than one session can give.

Whether the steps happen on the same day, and in which order, I decide after seeing your skin. Some faces only need the first step. Some need to skip it.

Step one: clearing the surface with HydraFacial

The cleansing step I use is HydraFacial, a patented vacuum device cleared by the FDA, CE and the Korean KFDA. It exfoliates gently, draws impurities and sebum out of the pores and infuses serums chosen for your skin, in about 30 minutes. There is no anaesthesia, no needle and no downtime. On its own, this step gives a cleaner, brighter, more hydrated surface that is most visible on the day and the days after. I cover the device, its benefits and its limits in my Korean HydraFacial guide, so here I will only say where it stops: it does not rebuild hydration or collagen in the deeper layers.

Step two: needle-free hydration with MiraJet

The second step is what separates a Korean glass facial in a clinic from a spa version. MiraJet delivers solutions such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins and growth factors into the dermis with a high-pressure jet instead of a needle. For anyone nervous about injections or worried about bruising before an event, it is the step that makes the glow last longer without a needle.

A session takes under an hour. Mild redness or swelling can appear for a few hours, up to a day. One session typically holds for 3–6 months. It is not suitable for atopic or keloid-prone skin, and results vary from person to person.

Worth knowing: A glass skin facial improves clarity, hydration and glow. It does not lift sagging skin, fill hollows or erase deep lines, and the most dramatic part of the effect is often the first few days. If your concern is laxity, tell me first, because that needs a different plan.

Optional step three: adding an injectable booster

Some skin is dry and thin enough that a facial and a needle-free step only scratch the surface. Then I consider an injectable booster. For a glow-focused plan, the one I think of first is HILO WAVE, a hyaluronic acid biostimulator. Deep dryness and glow often improve from the next day and elasticity from about a week, and our price list notes results typically last 3–4 months.

Adding a booster changes the day. Numbing cream goes on first, small raised bumps are normal for hours to a day, and redness or a small bruise can last a few days. It needs more margin before an event than the first two steps.

Timing a glass skin facial before an event

Most glass skin facial requests come with a date attached: a wedding, a shoot, a reunion. The steps have different recovery, so timing decides which ones make sense.

• A day or two before: HydraFacial alone. No downtime, and the glow is at its most visible early.
• Two to three days before: HydraFacial plus MiraJet, if your skin is not atopic or keloid-prone, allowing for redness of up to a day.
• A week or more before: a plan that includes an injectable booster, so bumps, redness or a bruise have time to settle.

Arrive without heavy make-up if you can, and keep sunscreen with you afterward. If you are also planning a laser or a lifting treatment on the same trip, tell us, because the order of treatments matters more than the date.

A glass skin facial is not a single item on our price list, because it is built from separate treatments. How I approach a glass skin facial at VOS

I begin with a short consultation and our 3D skin analysis, then decide which of the three steps your skin needs. Congested, dull skin may only need the cleanse. Dry skin that looks tired even when clean usually needs the needle-free step or a booster. Red, reactive skin sometimes needs a gentler plan, and I may suggest a repair-focused option instead of a stronger one.
