Korean Fat Dissolving Injection: 30 Min, 1–2 Days, 12 Weeks
Korean fat dissolving injection timeline: 10–20 minutes in the chair, 1–2 days of swelling, about 12 weeks to see change. VOS Dermatology, Gangnam.

A Korean fat dissolving injection takes about 10 to 20 minutes in the chair, and the clinic's own treatment notes list 1 to 2 days of possible swelling, bruising or redness, so a Thursday session usually leaves the weekend for that to settle. The contour change is much slower: the same notes put it at around 12 weeks, with 3 to 5 sessions spaced 12 weeks apart. That gap is what matters if you're flying in, because the swelling fits inside one trip while the result plays out over months.
I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years in practice. At VOS Dermatology in Gangnam I plan and perform these injections myself after an in-person skin analysis, and I'm writing this for people who've been told at home that only surgery would change their jawline.

How long does the visit take: 10 to 20 minutes, finished within 30?
The injection itself is short. The clinic's notes put it at about 10 to 20 minutes and completed within 30, so the consultation, the marking and your questions take longer than the needle.
Risks and side effects to know
The clinic's preferred injectable for small pockets of facial fat is a cholic-acid formula, used to refine the jawline, soften jowls and reduce fullness under the chin. A deoxycholic-acid injectable is used for selected patients. Both belong to the bile-acid family, which breaks down the membranes of fat cells so the body can clear them over the following weeks. That's why the only thing that changes on day one is swelling.
One detail you won't see from the outside: VOS draws injections through a 5μm filter syringe, which is there to catch fine particles such as ampoule glass before they reach the skin.
How do I plan around 1 to 2 days of swelling on a trip?
The clinic's notes describe swelling, bruising or redness lasting 1 to 2 days, and that's the number your flight plan hangs on. The table below spreads it across a typical stay; the later rows are general patterns for this kind of injection.
| When | What's common | What it means for the trip |
|---|---|---|
| Injection day | Warmth, tenderness, swelling starting | A quiet evening near the hotel |
| Day 1 | Swelling often most visible; a bruise is possible | Walking around Seoul is fine; photos may not be |
| Weeks 1–2 | The area may feel firm or tender to touch | Normal routine at home |
| Around week 12 | The contour change can be judged | The point to plan a next session |
Bruising is the variable that stretches the window. If you take a blood thinner, don't stop it on your own; mention it at the consultation so the plan accounts for it. Concealer covers most bruises after the first day, which helps if you're back at work on Monday.
If your return flight is set, send that date and tell us whether there's an event, a wedding or a work presentation, in the week after.

Why does the contour take about 12 weeks to change?
Because the body, not the needle, does the removing. Once fat cell membranes are disrupted, the body's own clean-up process clears the debris gradually, and the jawline refines as that happens.
That's why judging the result at week two is misleading. The firmness some people feel in the first weeks is part of that clean-up phase. The clinic's notes describe the result as long-lasting, but fat cells that remain can still grow with weight gain, so a steady weight protects what the injections achieved.

How many sessions will I need, 3 to 5 spaced 12 weeks apart?
The clinic's notes recommend 3 to 5 sessions at 12-week intervals. In calendar terms, three sessions span about six months from the first to the last.
For someone flying in, that usually means one session per trip. Some people line sessions up with trips they were already making; others do one or two sessions, then decide at the 12-week mark whether the change is enough. Both are reasonable.
The same logic applies to the body. On the clinic's menu, the upper-arm contouring with the cholic-acid injectable is planned by the amount of local fat, and CoolSculpting cools targeted fat to −11°C, with repeat treatments at about 6-week intervals and mild numbness that resolves within 2 weeks. If belly fat removal without surgery is what brought you here, the clinic's body contouring menu lists both.
What can go wrong, including the FDA's 2026 warning?
The common effects are the ones in the table: swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and temporary numbness. The rarer ones deserve the same attention.
For use under the chin, the label already listed nerve injury around the lower lip and jaw, difficulty swallowing, bruising, tissue and vascular injury, and hair loss, ulceration, tissue death or infection at the injection site. The update adds injection-site nodules or masses that may not resolve on their own, and, for use outside the under-chin area, vision problems near the eyes and nerve and muscle damage.
Those warnings are a reason to respect where the nerves and vessels run and to keep these injections well away from the eye area. If something after an injection doesn't look like ordinary swelling, what's normal after skin injections and what isn't is a useful reference.
Some people are better served by something else, or by waiting:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Postpone.
- Infection or inflamed skin at the injection site. Treat that first.
- A face that has already thinned after fast weight loss. Removing more fat usually moves in the wrong direction; the problem is often loose skin or lost volume.
- Larger volumes of fat. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes liposuction as a body contouring procedure rather than a weight-loss method, and for bigger areas it's a different conversation from injections.
Whether you're a candidate is decided in person, after the area has been examined.

How do I approach a jawline that isn't only fat?
A heavy lower face can come from four places: fat, the masseter muscle, skin that has started to sag, or the shape of the bone. Only the first responds to a fat dissolving injection, so the first question is which one you're looking at.
Pinching the area and watching the jaw while you clench separates fat from muscle quickly. A bulky masseter is a job for botulinum toxin. Skin sagging along the jaw responds to lifting, such as Ultherapy PRIME, a micro-focused ultrasound treatment aimed at the SMAS layer to lift the brow, jawline and lower face. When two causes overlap, the order matters, and how a dermatologist layers anti-aging treatments explains that thinking.
Worth knowing: Fat transfer and fat grafting, which show up in the same searches, are the opposite of this treatment: they add fat with a surgical procedure. They're not on our menu, and I'd rather say that plainly than have someone fly in expecting them.
Not every injection on a Seoul menu slims anything, either.
