I want to answer that question here the way I would across my desk.

The short answer: fat dissolving injections deliver an ingredient that breaks down fat cells in a small, defined area, and the body then clears them gradually over the following weeks. They suit a stubborn pocket of fat, not weight loss, and they usually take more than one session. This guide is for travelers who want to know what a Korean fat dissolving injection is, which products I use, what a session and the weeks after look like, and what it costs at VOS.

What a fat dissolving injection is, and what it is not

A fat dissolving injection places a small amount of an active ingredient directly into the fat layer under the skin. As general background, the ingredients used for this are bile acids. Your body makes bile acids naturally to break down dietary fat, and when one is injected into fat tissue it disrupts the membranes of the fat cells there. The damaged cells are then removed by the body's normal clearing processes, which is why the change appears gradually rather than on the day.

In the United States, a deoxycholic acid injection has FDA approval for fat under the chin, which is where the idea of a "double chin injection" comes from. In Korea, the term covers several products, and the words people search for vary: korea fat dissolving injection, V-line injection, jaw slimming injection. They do not all mean the same product, so the first question to ask any clinic is what exactly is in the vial.

What these injections are not is equally important. They do not reduce body weight. They do not tighten loose skin on their own. And they do not slim a jaw whose width comes from a strong chewing muscle or from bone. Those are different problems with different answers, and a large part of my consultation is working out which one you actually have.

The two injectables I use: Nuviju and BellaColline

• Nuviju is listed with cholic acid as its active ingredient. It is the product I prefer for localized facial fat. I commonly use it to refine the jawline, improve jowls and reduce fullness under the chin while keeping the face looking natural.
• BellaColline is a deoxycholic acid injection. I use it for selected patients who need a localized fat deposit reduced and better facial definition.

Nuviju is also what I use for the back of the upper arm, the area many people call "bat wings". For that area the amount is set according to how much localized fat there is, and it is a larger treatment than the face.

Who fat dissolving injections suit, and who they don't

The people who do well with this treatment usually share a few things:

• A soft, pinchable pocket of fat under the chin, along the jawline or on the back of the upper arm
• A jawline that looks blunt or a face that looks puffy because of that fat
• Reasonably stable weight, so the fat you see now is the fat we are treating
• Patience for a gradual result over several sessions
• A wish to avoid surgery and anesthesia

The treatment is the wrong choice in several situations. If the lower face looks heavy because skin and deeper tissue have started to sag, dissolving fat can leave the area looking looser, not tighter. Anyone with a drug allergy or a serious medical condition needs to consult me first, and so does anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding.

What the session and the following weeks look like

A session is short. The injection itself takes about 10–20 minutes and is completed within 30 minutes. I use fine needles, the pain is mild, and no anesthesia is required. You return to your day straight afterwards.

Right after. Temporary swelling, bruising or redness may occur and generally lasts 1–2 days. Under the chin, swelling can make the area look fuller for a short time before it looks slimmer, which surprises people who expect an instant change.

The first 24 hours. Avoid intense exercise, alcohol and saunas, and do not rub or press the treated area. Drinking enough water and light massage to support lymphatic circulation can help.

The following weeks. Contour improvement is generally seen within 12 weeks, because the body needs time to clear the treated cells. For the jawline and chin, 3–5 sessions at 12-week intervals are recommended. The results are described as long-lasting, and they can be maintained with follow-up care, but how long they last varies from person to person.

That schedule matters for travelers. One visit to Seoul fits one session comfortably. A full course takes months, so most people either plan several trips or treat one session as a start and decide on the rest once they have seen how their body responds.

What changes your total is mainly the vial count and the number of sessions. A small area under the chin needs far fewer vials than the back of both upper arms, and a course of several sessions multiplies the per-session figure. Worth knowing: Fat dissolving injections reduce fat; they do not tighten skin. If the skin over the area is already loose, removing fat underneath can make that looseness easier to see. Korean fat dissolving injections are one of several ways to deal with localized fat, and the right choice depends on the size and location of the area.

Injections work well for small, precise areas, especially on the face: under the chin, along the jawline, the jowls. The needle lets me place the product exactly where the fat sits.

CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to target fat cells while protecting the surrounding tissue, and the body clears the treated cells gradually. It is designed for larger body areas such as the flanks and lower abdomen. How I approach fat dissolving injections

My starting point is a simple test: I pinch the area. If there is a soft layer of fat to hold, there is something for the injection to work on. If there is mostly skin, or the fullness is firm muscle or bone, I tell you so and we talk about what would actually help.

I then look at you from the front and the side, at rest and while you talk, because the jawline changes with expression and posture. I mark the area before injecting so the product goes into the fat I intend to treat and nowhere else. I name the product and the vial count before we start, and the quote you see corresponds to that plan.

I also set expectations plainly. This is gradual, it usually takes several sessions, and you will likely look swollen for a day or two before you look slimmer. The result varies from person to person. I would rather you arrive with that picture than be disappointed on the flight home.
