Facial Procedures in Korea for Over-50s: What Holds Up
Facial procedures in Korea for adults over 50: which common beliefs hold up, what's non-surgical, how many sessions and what to plan. VOS Dermatology…

Most facial procedures in Korea that people over 50 ask a dermatologist about are non-surgical: focused ultrasound or radiofrequency for lift and firmness, injectables for volume and lines, and clinic facials for the surface of the skin. A handful of beliefs about them are half-true, and the table below sorts the common ones. If you're arranging this for a parent, the question under all of it is usually how they'll manage the days after, first in a Seoul hotel and then back home.
I'm Dr. Hongseok Kim, a board-certified dermatologist with 21 years in practice, and at VOS Dermatology in Gangnam I perform every procedure myself. Adult children planning a parent's trip are often the ones doing the reading, so this is written for both of you. Results vary from person to person, which is why the plan starts with a skin analysis and a one-to-one consultation rather than a menu.
If you're planning for a parent, send two things on WhatsApp: the dates you have in mind and a list of the medicines they take, especially anything that thins the blood.
Send your parent's dates and medicine list on WhatsApp| What people often believe | What's closer to the truth |
|---|---|
| Facial procedures in Korea mean surgery | Much of what a dermatology clinic offers is devices, injections and skin care rather than an operation |
| Lifting and tightening are the same | At VOS they are treated as distinct concepts: lifting works on the deeper support layer, tightening on skin firmness, and the two are frequently combined |
| A Korean facial is a spa treatment | A clinic facial is part of a dermatology plan, separate from devices and injections |
| Filler lifts a sagging face | Filler restores volume in specific areas such as the cheeks or temples; sagging is more often a question for a lifting device |

Surprise one: none of this involves an operating room
The facial work a dermatology clinic does is non-surgical. Facial contouring surgery, the bone work that appears in so many searches, is plastic surgery, a different specialty, and not something VOS offers.
What a dermatology clinic does offer is a set of tools that work at different depths. At VOS that includes focused-ultrasound lifting with Ultherapy PRIME, radiofrequency devices such as Thermage FLX and Volnewmer, Sofwave, pressure-wave lifting with Revinas, collagen-stimulating injectables, hyaluronic acid fillers, botulinum toxin and HydraFacial. The building itself is laid out by task: consultation on the second floor, the laser treatment room on the third, skin care on the fourth.
For an older parent that has a practical upside.
Why are lifting and tightening treated as two different jobs?
Because sagging and loose skin come from different layers. The clinic's own price list states that lifting and skin tightening are considered distinct treatment concepts, matched to the main cause of aging and frequently combined.
Lifting aims at the deeper support layer. Ultherapy PRIME, for instance, is a micro-focused ultrasound treatment targeting the SMAS layer to lift the brow, jawline and lower face. Tightening aims at the skin itself: Sofwave is described by the clinic as improving elasticity without harsh pulling, and Volnewmer as radiofrequency lifting that restores volume and elasticity. Revinas works deep in the skin for the jawline and facial contour, and the clinic's page notes it suits people with skin adhesion from prior treatments.
After 50, most faces show both problems at once, which is why a plan that only tightens or only lifts can look half-finished. You can see how the clinic groups these tools on the face line treatment page.

Does one visit really do it?
Sometimes, but several treatments are designed as a course. The price list describes Revinas as a series of three or more sessions. The V-Line slim injection for jawline fat is planned as 3 to 5 sessions at 12-week intervals.
Energy devices behave differently again. For a parent, that means the trip is the treatment day, and the result arrives at home.
This is also where expectations go wrong most often. A parent who expected to see the whole change in the hotel mirror can feel let down on day three, when nothing has failed at all.
What a Korean facial means at a dermatology clinic
A clinic facial is a skin-conditioning treatment, not a device or an injection. HydraFacial, for example, takes about 30 minutes according to the clinic's notes, with an immediate return to daily activities, and addresses dryness, pores, redness, fine lines and impurities.
That makes it a reasonable first appointment on a trip, or an add-on for a parent who wants something gentle. The glow it gives is immediate and fades; the glow from boosters builds over weeks, and instant glow versus glow that builds lays out the difference. If your parent's main concern is persistent redness or flushing, what helps facial redness is the better starting point, because some facials can aggravate it. For skin quality rather than surface glow, polynucleotide boosters are covered in Rejuran types and sessions.

Fillers, toxins and an older face: the risks worth knowing
Injectables are where the real risks sit, and they deserve a plain explanation before anyone books.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists the common side effects of dermal fillers as bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching and rash. The rare, serious one is filler entering a blood vessel and blocking blood flow, which can damage skin and, in rare cases, affect vision. The FDA also warns against fillers bought online or injected by unlicensed providers. The American Academy of Dermatology gives similar advice about checking who is injecting and what product is used.
Older skin adds a few considerations:
- Blood thinners and some supplements raise bruising. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner without the doctor who prescribed it; tell us instead.
- Old filler from years ago still matters. Mention it, even if you don't know the product.
- Thinner skin shows bruises longer. Plan an extra quiet day if appearance on the flight matters.
- Recent facial surgery or an active skin infection usually means waiting.
For botulinum toxin, VOS primarily uses a highly purified toxin without complexing proteins, a choice intended to reduce the chance of antibody formation with repeated treatments. Which of these procedures is suitable for a particular face is decided only after an in-person examination.
Worth knowing: When an adult child books for a parent, I'd ask you to bring the parent's own words about what bothers them. The thing a daughter notices and the thing her mother minds are often different, and the plan should follow the person in the chair.
Planning the days after for a parent
The clinic is at 806 Eonju-ro in Gangnam, in front of Dosan Park. The nearest subway exits are an 11-minute walk from Gangnam-gu Office Station on Line 7 and a 14-minute walk from Apgujeong Station on Line 3; for a parent after an injection, a taxi to the door is often easier, and valet parking is available at the building.
Hours shape the plan too. VOS is open 10:00 to 19:00 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, until 20:00 on Friday, and 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturday, closed on Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises medical travelers to arrange follow-up at home and carry copies of their records, which for a parent means leaving Seoul with the treatment names, areas and dates written down for their own doctor.
If you're putting the itinerary together now, send your parent's travel dates and the name of any blood thinner they take.

How I approach a first consultation for someone over 50
The first question is which problem is in front of us: sagging, lost volume, the surface of the skin, or a mix. The clinic uses 3D skin analysis, and the consultation is one to one, in a private room on the second floor.
The third is practical: how much visible recovery the person can accept before their flight, and who is traveling with them.
An honest plan for an older face often has fewer steps than people expect, done in the right order.

Before you message us
If your parent prefers to write their own message, that works too. Results vary from person to person.
